Get to know Ross Sandlin
Ross Sandlin is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and music educator from Stone Mountain, GA. His relationship with music was influenced by a family that loved many styles and eras of popular music. Private lessons, starting in middle school, furthered his interest and passion for studying music. In college, he attended the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, a contemporary music program that offered studies in Jazz, Classical, and World music. There he was exposed to the world of music outside of Western Popular music. He was able to study West African percussion, Middle Eastern music, and Jazz.
After school, he moved to Denver, CO, and began working as a performing artist and session musician. Working within a variety of genres such as Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B, Hip Hop, Middle Eastern music, Rock, and more. After reading “The Music Lesson”, by the Grammy-winning bassist Victor Wooten, he began teaching private lessons professionally. The opportunity to share his passion for music with others was a transformative experience. Since then, teaching has become the primary outlet for Ross’ relationship with music.
In the Summer of 2023, he relocated to Stone Mountain, GA, with his family where he currently resides. He continues to study music and is now focusing on using Digital Audio Workstations via computer to write and produce music. The world of audio sampling is another area of recent focus and study. Currently, he creates music under the name “Wandering Woods” where he produces Hip-Hop and Jazz influenced Lofi music.
His lessons and approach to teaching focus on creating an environment full of patience and nurturing. Studying music is a lifelong journey and he hopes to model the balance and discipline it takes to achieve success for his students. Lessons primarily focus on the mechanical skills necessary to play music, and the theory knowledge necessary to “speak the language” of music.
