Get to know South Scholz
South graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor's in Music Composition and a Minor in Studio Art. He performed with the university's Symphonic band, Contemporary Ensemble, and University Singers.
During his high school education, South was a dedicated and well recognized music student. He was the principal alto saxophonist of the Helena High School wind ensemble and jazz band, as well as the saxophone section leader for the marching band. South attended numerous honor bands at various universities, routinely placing first chair alto saxophone. He was the principal alto saxophonist in the Shelby County Honor Band for 5 years running, and received a Superior Medal at the All State Solo Festival. At the Alabama High School All State Band Festival he was given an honorary baton for his performance by Composer Julie Giroux.
South began teaching saxophone students during his high school years, while also playing various live jazz gigs around Birmingham. He received advanced saxophone lessons from renowned local Musician, Arranger, & Orchestrator Dwight Houston. South credits Dwight for his interests and propensity for music interpretation and joined him as the Assistant Music teacher at the F.I.L.E.S Art Camp in 2019.
During South's years at university, he learned to play various other instruments, including Piano, Drum-set, Flute, and Voice. He enjoys teaching music interpretation, composition, and relishes bringing out his student players' strengths during lessons.
