Performance Experience: Mr. Houghton has been a professional freelance musician on woodwind instruments and keyboard in the Atlanta area since 1991, frequently performing with bands of all styles, including jazz, pop/rock, country, and experimental music at a variety of venues. He has performed with such notable artists as Dr. John, Diane Schuur, Marvin Stamm, Marian McPartland, Duffy Jackson, and the Ray McKinley Orchestra. He has performed solo recitals in classical style at several universities.
Teaching Experience: Private instructor on woodwind instruments (flute, clarinets, saxophones) and jazz studies (for any instrument) since 1983. Professor of jazz studies and classical woodwind instruments at Clayton State University since 1997. Professor of woodwind instruments and jazz combo at Georgia State Perimeter College, 2009-2015. Private instructor of saxophone, clarinet, and flute on the faculty of the Georgia Academy Of Music (Buckhead), 1997-2018.
Teaching Philosophy: In music education, the private setting with a master teacher is the most effective for optimum results on any instrument because the teacher serves as a musical model to inspire and motivate the student. Beginners learn good playing habits for the chosen instrument over a band class, and the student receives individual attention for personal problems. Students must understand that a professional teacher will not be effective without daily personal practice, a very necessary part of success.
