About Tyler Garner
Get to know Tyler Garner
Tyler has always had a close relationship with music. Ever since he started playing cello at 9 years old, he’s continued to discover himself through different musical styles, instruments, and mediums. As he moved into middle school he began studying trumpet, french horn, and intermediate music theory. Eventually his director coerced him into arranging music for his school wind ensemble, which then led himself to begin writing original instrumental music.
After developing a strong foundation in music, Tyler started to explore the worlds of theatre and dance as he moved through high school. During this time he began to cultivate his own style of writing lyrics, mostly due to the inspiration he felt from Broadway composers and lyricists like Tom Kitt, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Sondheim. His passion for music, acting, and dance led himself to pursue a degree in Musical Theatre at Catawba College and then Western Carolina University.
Since 2016, Tyler has worked as a theatre artist in and around North Carolina as a performer, choreographer, and music director. During this time he has also been able to hone his skills at the piano along with his songwriting approach. Some of his biggest influences are Lady Gaga, Carole King, Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, and Whitney Houston.
In 2023 Tyler returned back to the Greensboro area and has performed as a solo musician in many local venues. Recently he has joined a local band and continues to grow and thrive in Greensboro’s music scene.
As a teacher, one of Tyler’s biggest priorities is making sure his students have a safe environment where they can freely grow, learn, and create art without judgment. He bases his piano and voice teaching around technique, music theory, ear training, music history, and composition. He also prioritizes working closely with students in order to understand their personal skill levels and to work towards their goals as an artist.
