Teaching Philosophy: Music should be fun! In order to get there, we have to put in the time honing our skills. The benefits are worth it, and there's always something new to learn when it comes to playing music and playing with other musicians. Giving students the tools to get there themselves is what makes teaching rewarding.

Get to know William Boardman

Originally just a piano student and trumpet player in marching band during high school, I ended up taking a slightly different path toward choral music and education.  I graduated from college in '94 and headed down to S. Florida to be a rock star!!  The fame and fortune became too much. (Ha, kidding!)  My band worked for 6 years playing mini-tours up and down Florida and the U.S. East Coast including showcases in Boston and Atlanta, but we never achieved the ultimate "making it big".    While playing in the band I began teaching a few lessons in a small music store in Ft. Lauderdale.  Ultimately the store ended up closing, but it turned into an opportunity for me to go to houses and teach piano lessons "on the road".  At its peak, I had around 40 students and made a living teaching.  At the same time my public school teaching career began at a high school in S. Florida, and I ended up moving to West Atlanta.  There I took a supplemental church pianist job while still teaching lessons in the area in addition to teaching public school in Cobb County, GA.  The school jobs were choral director positions where I had the opportunity to bring my choirs to perform in Atlanta as well as at Disney's Candlelight Processional in Epcott.  We also formed a 60-member extracurricular gospel choir who performed at various churches in and around Atlanta.  In 2004 I ended up moving back to Virginia Beach where I taught three years of middle school chorus, played in churches, taught lessons, and ended up where I currently direct music. (Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, Ocean Lakes High School)  Every two years the Ocean Lakes chorus travels to Orlando to perform at Disney Candlelight mass processional with professional orchestras and celebrity narrators.  For the past 20 years I have had the opportunity to conduct combined symphonic orchestras with choir, and have enjoyed performing the Masterworks with church and school groups.
