Get to know Zachary Curtis
Zachary Curtis was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV and began his musical journey in fourth grade playing the trumpet. During his high school career, he participated in many Las Vegas musical activities including Faith Lutheran Wind Ensemble, Musical Pit Orchestras, Las Vegas Academy Jazz Band and the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic.
Upon graduating from the Las Vegas Academy in 2009 with a degree in World Jazz Studies, Zachary attended the Community College of Southern Nevada where he studied music theory, composition, and trumpet performance. He also participated in a wide variety of chamber and large ensembles including Jazz Band, Community Band, and Orchestra while completing an associates of arts degree in Music.
After graduating from the Community College in 2011, Zachary continued his musical studies at the University of Nevada, Reno and pursued a bachelor’s degree in music education. Here he advanced his trumpet performance studies with Prof. Paul Lenz and gained a wide range of teaching techniques and procedure through the study of Elementary General Music with Prof. Catherine Pollard. Zachary was also involved with many of the performance ensembles at the University of Nevada, Reno including the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. A.G. “Mack” McGrannahan III, the Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jason Altieri, and the Wolf Pack Marching Band under the direction of Dr. William Plenk.
Most recently, Zachary has graduated with a master’s degree in wind band conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he studied under Maestro Thomas G. Leslie and served as a conducting assistant with many of the ensembles including the UNLV “Star of Nevada” Marching Band, New Horizon Band, and Symphonic Band as well as playing trumpet in the UNLV Wind Orchestra.
