About the Clinician
Eric Baumgartner grew up with a musical family in Solo, Ohio (near Cleveland). His mother is a piano teacher and his father a guitarist and vocalist. He began piano lessons at age seven and was intrigued by Beethoven, Prokofiev and Stravinsky as he was with the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Thelonious Monk. Eric studied classical piano with Maxine Cummins and Nancy Bachus and jazz piano with Pat Pace.
Mr. Baumgartner holds a bachelor of music degree from Boston’s Berklee College of Music and a master’s degree in jazz studies from Chicago’s DePaulUniversity. While in Chicago, he studied jazz with Larry Novak and Alan Swain and taught at the prestigious Swain Studios. His many published piano works include the jazz exercise series Jazzabilities. He also creates MIDI/CD orchestrations for many popular Willis publications including the Teaching Little Fingers to Play supplementary series and the John Thompson Popular Piano Series. He has conducted clinics throughout the United States and Australia, sharing with teachers his effective jazz pedagogy techniques.
Mr. Baumgartner’s weekends are often spent playing keyboard and guitar with various jazz, rock, and theatre groups including two celebrated tribute bands, Aja (Steely Dan) and Savoy Truffle (The Beatles). He has written two musical melodramas and has composed jingles for radio and TV commercials. He lives happily in Cincinnati with his wife, Aretta, and several furry creatures.
