Get to know Phil Spiess
Phil Spiess has worked as a live sound and recording engineer since 2005. He started his career apprenticing under Jim Bienemann and Mike Atherton at Common Ground on the Hill. He has gone on to do audio mixing and engineering for Taylor Swift, The Seldom Scene, Jack White, Jeff Beck, Afghan Whigs, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Sierra Hull, Tony Trischka, and many more. He currently tours as the monitor engineer for Oliver Anthony and the front of house audio engineer for Carbon Leaf, The Stews, and the Dirty Grass players. Phil is one of the audio engineers for IBMA, Del Fest, The Red Wing Roots Music Festival, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, North Carolina Folk Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival and The Blue Highway Festival. When not touring he runs R.A.C.: Recording and Vintage Audio Repair. He is also the front man and song writer for the band Probably Whiskey. Finally he is a member of the Grammy’s and part of their active effort in lobbying congress for musician and music industry professional rights.
