About John Walker
John grew up in Albuquerque. New Mexico, and then moved to Louisville Kentucky to pursue a degree at the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program. He spent his time in Louisville studying jazz, and then playing as many different genres of music as possible before moving to the St. Louis area. John has performed with big names like Adam Nussbaum and Doc Severinsen in a big band setting. He has accompanied the poet laureate Ron Whitehead at music and poetry jams. He has worked with the popular music group Lincoln Bridge from Louisville, has performed at the jazz club. Jimmy Can't Dance with various bands, and has played shows in many different venues with the rock band Blind Feline. He has also played a variety of gigs at bars and restaurants. John continues to expand his own abilities and studies through practice and performance.
John believes the fundamentals of music will have a positive impact on student's critical thinking and learning abilities. He teaches beginning to advanced saxophone and flute students, both classical and jazz; specializing in improvisation and music theory. He has taught group classes such as jazz combos as well as individual students. He plays and listens to music of all kinds; bluegrass, funk, rock, jazz, blues, pop etc, and uses his connection to these genres to help keep students interested on an individual basis. John is happy to answer any questions about his approach to teaching, and is actively looking for more students.
