Growing up in a small town, he participated in choirs and piano lessons and picked up the mellophone so that he could fill a spot in the high school marching band. This newfound passion led him to the Marching Owls in his undergraduate studies, where he began horn to pursue a career in music education. He began teaching and freelancing in the Metro Atlanta area and has been contracted in various musical productions and local orchestras while teaching from 5th grade to undergraduate level. His past students have made their own way into district honor bands, the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, the Atlanta Symphony Youth Talent Development Program, and [in quartet performance] the annual GMEA convention. His primary teachers are Richard Williams, Johanna Yarbrough, Dilon Bryan, and Seth Orgel. Benji’s teaching philosophy centers around making music accessible to anyone, no matter what. “Music and the arts have always been there for me: I have them to thank for the person I am today. Music is everything to me, and sharing that passion with others is the only way I know to pay it back.” Benji lives in Baton Rouge where he enjoys volunteer services, culinary arts, literature, and most of all, spending time with friends and family.
