Get to know Deborah Smith
Deborah Smith is a trombonist, composer, educator, and bandleader based in Philadelphia. A graduate of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance, she has performed at venues including Birdland Jazz Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Chris’ Jazz Café, leading her own ensembles and as a member of notable small bands and big bands.
Deborah is deeply committed to music education and equity in the arts. She teaches with the Kimmel Center’s Jazz for Freedom program and has worked with the Philadelphia Clef Club, Generation Music, BackCountry Jazz, and K.E.Y.S., while also participating in organizations such as Key of She and Future in Music. Her teaching focuses on healthy technique, versatility, and creativity, helping students develop confidence, musical curiosity, and a lasting connection to the arts.
