Douglas has been playing the piano for nearly six decades and brings 20 years of private teaching experience to his lessons. His teaching philosophy centers on developing practical piano skills and strong musicianship while helping students build a lasting appreciation and love for music.
Douglas works with students of all ages, levels, and abilities. He believes that every student can make meaningful progress with clear instruction, consistent practice, and encouragement. His lessons are designed to give students the skills and understanding they need to become confident, capable musicians while keeping the learning process enjoyable and rewarding.
A graduate of Florida State University, Douglas studied piano with Marilyn Neeley, Karol Louwenaar, and Carolyn Bridger and continued his private piano studies with Ms. Neeley in the Washington, D.C. area. Before attending university, he won a regional piano competition that led to a performance with the New Orleans Symphony, where he performed the first movement of Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor.
Douglas especially enjoys working with students as they discover what they can accomplish at the piano. Whether a student is just beginning, returning to piano after time away, preparing for a performance, or looking to strengthen their technique and musicianship, he strives to create a supportive and encouraging lesson environment where students can grow, gain confidence, and develop a lifelong relationship with music.
Douglas is an active member of several professional music-teaching organizations, including the Music Teachers National Association, Virginia Music Teachers Association, Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association, Maryland Music Teachers Association, Washington, D.C. Music Teachers Association, and the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
