Get to know Dustin Mallory
Dustin Mallory is a percussionist and music educator who lives in the Philadelphia suburbs. He previously served on the faculties of Valley City State University, Lincoln University, Rutgers University, and the Wissahickon School District. His areas of specialization include jazz, percussion, and music theory.
Mallory performed at the PMEA conference as a member of the Doylestown Symphonic Winds and led a performance by the VCSU Percussion Ensemble at the NDMEA conference, both in 2023. Additionally, his high school jazz bands were regular competitors in the Cavalcade of Bands Jazz Festivals and was named Glen Miller Division Champions in 2019.
Mallory has lectured at conferences in the United States, Canada, and England. He has published articles or presented papers for the following organizations: Society for American Music, Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, McGill University Music Symposium, University of Surrey, Columbia University, Florida Southern College, the Percussive Arts Society, the Journal of Jazz Studies, All About Jazz, Sound Teaching, and Cadence: The Independent Journal of Creative Improvised Music. He has given several presentations on jazz drummer “Philly” Joe Jones and is currently writing his biography.
Mallory is a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University where he earned a B.A. in Music Education (PK-12 certification) and was awarded an M.A. in Jazz History & Research from Rutgers University. He also endorses Black Swamp Percussion products and is a member of their Educator Network.
