Gemaal
Brown- pianist, composer, and producer- is a native of Queens, NY. He graduated
from Bayside High School and was a member the Gospel Choir and Jazz Band
Ensemble. He attended Central State University and Queensborough Community
College and completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Five Towns College. He has
sixteen years of experience playing the piano and eight years on the organ. He
has also worked vigorously to make sure gospel, jazz, R&B, Neo-soul, and
classical genres of music are part of his repertoire. While attending Central
State, Gemaal was a student accompanist for the Central State University Chorus
and performed in many venues, including Severance Hall with the Cleveland
Orchestra, Schuster Center in Dayton, Ohio and the Great Western Forum in Los
Angeles.
Gemaal
has been inspired by many great musicians and composers/producers. His
favorite composers consist of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Johann Sebastian
Bach and Thomas "Fats" Waller. He is also a fan of Art
Tatum, Rev. Timothy Wright, Fred Hammond, Richard Smallwood, Victor
Borge, Erroll Garner and countless others.
Gemaal has been teaching piano for 20 years. He has taught
ages 4 all the way up to 80 and has a unique perspective on the process. He
believes that learning music is hands on and likens it to learning how to speak
a language. We start by building up a vocabulary and apply it when necessary.
The same principle applies to music and it is this approach that has made Gemaal’s
teaching translate across ages and teaching fields.
