About Helen McKinney
Get to know Helen McKinney
I've been a soloist, accompanist & keyboard player most of my life. My 1st paying gig was playing at a holiday banquet at age 5 & later, I was the pianist for a traveling gospel group from age 13 until college. I played piano in clubs & restaurants from age 17 & played keyboards in various rock, pop & blues bands. I was the pianist for the contemporary service at The Episcopal Church of St. Peter & St. Paul in Marietta for 10 years & occasionally play for private parties & weddings.
I am Suzuki & Orff-Schulwerk certified and trained in traditional piano pedagogy; however, each student has a unique learning style and no one method is best for everyone. I try to determine the best approach for each student and develop a personalized course of instruction that includes training in performance technique, ear training, sight-reading, theory, composition and improvisation at developmentally appropriate levels and suited to each student's unique abilities and preferences.
