Get to know Ian Semanovich
Ian Semanovich is a music educator based in Charleston, SC. He received a Bachelor's degree in music education from Bowling Green State University in 2019. While attending BGSU, Ian was fortunate to study under distinguished artist professor Dr. John Sampen, Dr. Matthew Younglove, and Dr. Nick Zoulek. Throughout his time at BGSU, Ian worked with some of the finest saxophone teachers in masterclasses, performing alongside graduate students in saxophone quartets and ensembles, and playing contemporary classical music at the annual BGSU New Music Festival and the New Music Gathering that was held at Bowling Green in 2017. Performances at these events included world premiers of works that had never been performed. Ian has performed in many competitions, such as the Douglas Wayland Chamber Music Competition and the BGSU Concerto Competition. After graduating from BGSU, Ian secured the position of Director of Bands and Choir at Whiteville High School and taught there for three years. In those three years, the band program grew in size from 35 students to 70 students total, and the marching band performed in at least six parades per season, as well as performing at all football games. Ian's students were frequently placed in the top spots in district honor bands, and could be seen performing around Whiteville at different events. Ian currently holds the position of Director of Bands at St. John's High School, where the main goal is growing the band program so that it has the ability to reach all students. Along with this, Ian is hoping to provide a quality music education to all students who enroll in his classes, making sure that all students have a great chance at success.
