About Jay Schilling
Get to know Jay Schilling
Jay’s multifaceted love of music began early, learning the fundamentals on the piano and clarinet. This proved to be foundational, establishing a lifelong love of music. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jay’s passion for movie soundtracks fueled his desire to play orchestral and ensemble music. His high school and undergraduate years were spent crafting his musical skills specifically with the bassoon, winning a concerto contest (Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in Bb) and completing his bachelor’s degree at California Polytechnic University - Humboldt. These efforts earned him a full-ride scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Washington School of Music, under the tutelage of Arthur Grossman, a world-renowned bassoonist. Jay not only graduated with his master’s degree but also had the privilege to perform with the University Symphony Orchestra, wind ensemble, and many other chamber groups around the Puget Sound. A favorite performance was Handel’s “Messiah” with the Bellevue Chamber Choir Orchestra. Along the way, Jay also became proficient in the acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele, playing in bands and special ensembles. Jay has always enjoyed singing, being a member of numerous choirs, a vocal soloist, and a choir director. Jay’s most recent musical adventure has been in composition and songwriting, with several works being performed publicly.
As a teacher for Music & Arts, Jay uses his deep passion for music and wealth of experience to inspire students of all ages to grow in their musical skills while developing the ability to enjoy creating beautiful music!
