Get to know Joshua Seymour
Joshua Seymour is a bassist located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was born in Central, Louisiana and first began his musical journey at the age of twelve when he began studying guitar with Ian Frasier. At fourteen, he picked up the electric bass and began performing with his high school jazz ensemble where he received instruction from Patrick Bordelon. He later began studying upright bass with Dr. John Madere at the age of eighteen, when he began pursuing his degree in Jazz Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. While at Southeastern Louisiana University, Seymour has received lessons in jazz pedagogy from Michael Brothers. He also has received private instruction on jazz bass from Dr. Molly Redfield at Louisiana State University, as well as jazz improvisation from Berklee School of Music graduate Dr. John Bishop.
Seymour maintains an active schedule as both a classical and jazz bassist, holding positions with the Southeastern Louisiana University Jazz Ensemble, Southeastern Louisiana University Advanced Jazz Combo, Southeastern Louisiana University Symphony Orchestra, and the Civic Orchestra of Baton Rouge. In addition to these positions, Seymour has collaborated with the Southeastern Louisiana University Percussion Ensemble, Southeastern Louisiana University Wind Symphony, and West Baton Rouge Oasis Jazz Band. As a freelance musician, Seymour performs locally around the Baton Rouge and Hammond areas with several jazz groups such as the Brian Martin Quintet and William Barber Quartet. Seymour has recorded with the Southeastern Louisiana University Jazz Ensemble, releasing their recording of “Yesterdays” in 2023 under the direction of Michael Brothers.
