About J.Q David
Get to know J.Q David
I have been playing the guitar since I was about 12 years old. When I began playing, I was primarily self taught, then as my desire to improve grew I began studying under Marc Siegel for approximately 2 years; learning classical, jazz, and music theory in relation to the instrument, and habits for proper technique. Then I began learning under Michael Kurdirka at UNCSA, further developing my classical technique and expanding my repertoire to more challenging pieces while improving my skills interpreting sheet music for about a year. Most recently, I have been studying with Alan Hirsh developing my pedagogy and learning to arrange for larger ensembles.
I have experience not only in an academic setting, but also directly in the field as a performer. I have been in bands as a lead and rhythm guitarist often at the same time, as well as a songwriter for solo and ensemble projects. I also have much experience in recording music as well as mixing and mastering. My practical experience can be used to prepare students for any setting they choose, whether it be live performance or a more casual hobby. I am able to give students the knowledge to be a rock star in any setting.
My knowledge of music theory is extensive with a thorough understanding of harmony and melody, many scales, modes, and styles of music. I have a diverse repertoire including pieces in the styles of Classical, Jazz, Progressive Metal, Rock, Neo Soul and many more. I have a way of seeing where a student is at, meeting them there and taking them further at their own pace in a way that is challenging, fun and exciting for them. I have mastered techniques such as finger picking, tremolo picking, sweep picking, tapping, thumping, and slapping. I have a range of knowledge that can teach someone who has never played a guitar to an advanced player.
