Teaching Philosphy: Recognizing individual's talents allows them to shine in areas while polishing others. Rep. is chosen according to pupils' aspirations, not just by method books. Jotting class notes & a practice journal is suggested. Ambitions students are encouraged to reach beyond limits. Others studying for fun can learn in more relaxed fashion. "Let's try" replaces "I can't" & often results in success with smiles! My playing flute in class is a norm so pupils can listen as well as hopefully be inspired!

Get to know Katherine Calvey

Originally from Cleveland, OH, Katherine Calvey has been graced with an abundant international musical career which has allowed her to perform as a concerto soloist, recitalist and principal flutist in professional orchestras in 4 continents and 19 countries.

Katherine accredits her extensive career to her firm foundation of her musical training.  She studied with several members of The Cleveland Orchestra and was a member of The Inaugural Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. Her college studies began at The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music with a talent scholarship, where she also taught at their music preparatory department.  She earned her Bachelors of Music Degree in Flute Performance from The Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins (America’s 1st conservatory of music) as a student of Mark Sparks and Masters of Music Degree in Flute Performance from The University of Michigan where she studied with Leone Buyse as a full scholarship student. She was honored to be selected to perform master classes with leading flutists of most major orchestras worldwide, and most notably with the renown flutist - Sir James Galway.

Katherine has made learning flute fun for students of all levels and ages ranging from six to sixty! Apart from teaching nearly one hundred former private flute students in studios extending from Flute World to giving master classes all over the world, she is grateful for additional opportunities to have conducted college orchestra, coach chamber music and direct college music departments. Her experience in winning many music competitions (including The National Littmann Music Competition in New York at the age of 16, amongst others in Washington D.C. and the Cleveland Rotary Club Music Competition), in addition to performing at Carnegie Hall; has given Katherine a wealth of information to share with her students.  She is proud to see the majority of her former students land jobs in music, but she also finds joy in teaching students who like to play flute as a hobby just to brighten their day!

Much of Katherine Calvey’s musical career has been in Latin America so she is bilingual English/Spanish.  She loves nature, her cocker spaniel dog, and enjoys snorkeling in the ocean.
