      Lisa Scalabrino
      Lisa Scalabrino
      Music Teacher, Master
      Location: Chesapeake, VA
      Speaks: English
      Instructs: Cello, Piano, Violin
Education: Bachelor of Music Education, Eastern Michigan University; Master of Music in Music Education, Michigan State University
Performance Experience: With an education background, I've performed on a variety of instruments and voice in orchestras, bands, choirs, and smaller ensembles. In addition to ensemble playing and singing, I’ve performed solo piano and harp and provided piano accompaniment in a variety of settings. I’ve directed student performances of varying types from orchestra concerts to musical theater productions.
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience includes thirteen years as a public school music teacher, first in Michigan and then here in Virginia. My specialty during that time was primarily beginning strings and orchestra (violin, viola, cello, and bass) and elementary general music, while also offering private instruction on a limited basis for string instruments and piano.
Teaching Philosophy: Every human being has the potential to make music, and music has the potential to improve our lives as human beings. My aspiration is to provide students an access point from which they can tap into their own musicianship and musical enjoyment, building a strong foundation from which they can make their own musical choices and experience musical growth.

With degrees in Music Education and teaching in public schools for over a decade, my focus has long been teaching rather than performing, but performing is where things began. I began playing piano at age seven and harp at age fourteen. I played a variety of other instruments throughout school and college and sang a bit as well. I began college with piano as my principal instrument and soon switched to harp. At this time, I also started study of the other orchestral string instruments – violin, viola, cello, and bass – in preparation for teaching and conducting school orchestras. I later took a methods course concentrating on elementary general music and became fascinated with the possibilities in that field. In my career as a public school music teacher, I specialized in elementary general music and beginning strings, continuing coursework and professional development in those areas while teaching. I am most experienced working with beginning level students, in particular elementary-aged students, based on my years in the public schools. I am excited to bring music to the forefront for piano students and strings students of all ages!
