Get to know Mark Costis
Mark began playing percussion in middle school concert band and went on to play in high school symphonic band, marching band, and jazz band. In college, he studied with George Carrol (Army Band and Disney Music Director), which included playing with bands in musical genres ranging from field snare drumming, to jazz/swing/ragtime bands, and orchestras. As a semi-professional musician he has played in bands performing at venues including Jiffy Lube Arena and the 9:30 club opening for bands such as Pat Benatar, Styx, Vanilla Ice, Matchbox 20, Our Lady Peace, and Jimmy’s Chicken Shack. He has recorded at Omega Studios and Music and Arts and worked with engineers including Drew Mazurek and Marco Delmar. His past bands include Smart Bomb, Otherhood, Mantis, and Scarab, and he is currently in the band Johnny Analogue.
Mark is skilled in drum set, concert/rudimental snare drumming, and mallet instruments, and he is versed in musical styles ranging from rock to metal, prog, funk, fusion, reggae, dubstep, and drum and bass/jungle. With more than four decades of drumming experience, Mark is not just skilled at playing and performing—he also excels in teaching students of all ages and abilities, by breaking drumming techniques down into easily digestible concepts, communicating them consistently and clearly to the student, and always maintaining high levels of enthusiasm and energy. Mark loves the drums, and he loves teaching students how to become amazing drummers!
