About Mason Haskett

My name is Mason Haskett, and I am a violist. I provide the highest quality instruction to violinists and violists of all ages and skill levels. My teaching method is heavily influenced by the technical exercises of Demetrius Constantine Dounis and Otakar Ševčík, adapting the ease and facility taught in those exercises to benefit all of my students. Additionally, I draw inspiration from pop music and electronic music, incorporating effects pedals and amplification into my teaching. I value spontaneity and thinking outside the box when tackling challenges on the instrument, often looking to other artistic and musical disciplines to inspire my students.

For beginning students, my focus is on building a strong foundation. They will learn how to hold their instruments in an optimal way, read sheet music, and develop good intonation through scales, listening, and singing. I emphasize creating a great tone early on and building understanding of the various bow techniques. Students can shifting confidently from 1st through 3rd position. I also teach beginners how to use the tuner and metronome to establish consistent, reliable practice habits.

For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on refining key aspects of technique and musicianship. This includes achieving mastery of tonal colors, bow control, expressive vibrato, and a strong sense of rhythm. My students develop the tools to improve their fundamentals and take their playing to the next level. Developing excellent bow control and independent left-hand finger action is essential for aspiring musicians aiming to succeed at the collegiate and professional level.
