A graduate of the former Armed Forces School of Music and holds an Associate Degree in General Arts from the Technical College of the Lowcountry
Performance Experience:
- A featured soloist with multiple military bands
- Featured soloist with the Pensacola Civic Band and the Lowcountry Wind Ensemble
- Has performed live with the following: The Zac Brown Band, Faith Hill, The O'Jays, Jim Neighbors, Candace Glover, Ledisi, Diana Ross, and Mary J. Blige
- Has performed locally with the following: The Forte Jazz Lounge Big Band, Charleston Jazz Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, North Charleston Pops, Charleston Gospel Choir, and the Dock Street Theatre
Teaching Experience:
Melvin has more than 20 years of teaching experience. Some of his past students have received honors on the local, district, and state level. Some of his former students have attended colleges and universities such as: University of Georgia, Loyola University, Pensacola State College, and Grambling State University. Additionally, former students currently serve in military bands. He has taught clinics on various topics at many high schools, colleges and universities while he was on active duty.
Teaching Philosophy:
Melvin uses music as a way to help students learn meaningful life lessons in addition to it being another language they can use to express themselves.
Get to know Melvin
Melvin is a skilled multi-instrumentalist and retired United States Marine Corps musician (primarily tuba, saxophone and clarinet) that moved to the Charleston area in 2022. Prior to the move, he was a freelance musician in the Beaufort, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, areas. While there, he participated in almost 30 musical theater productions at the Arts Center for Coastal Carolina and taught at the Hilton Head Jazz Camp for multiple years. Before that, he was a freelance musician in New Orleans, Louisiana, as a tubist, saxophonist and clarinetist.
