Get to know Reece Updike

Reece began playing the trumpet here in the Howard County Public School System at the age of 9, and was an active participant in numerous scholastic and independent music ensembles all throughout his time in grade school. He became the principal trumpet player of the Centennial High School Wind Ensemble at the age of 15, and remained as such until his graduation in 2018. During this time, the CHS Wind Ensemble auditioned for, and was selected to perform at the Midwest Music Educators Clinic, becoming the First Wind Ensemble in Maryland to be accepted in over 40 years. Following his graduation, Reece received a full tuition merit scholarship to attend and study music at The University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied under renowned trumpet performer and educator Chris Gekker until his graduation in 2023.

Aside from the more traditional forms of trumpet performance, Reece also has a wealth of experience in the marching arts. Reece auditioned for The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps at the age of 17 and was granted the position of lead trumpet for the 2018 season before going on to serve as the principal trumpet player and soloist in the 2019 through 2021 seasons.

In addition to his performance experience, Reece has also been developing his career as an educator since he was in college. After passing the age limit of The Cadets, Reece was hired to join the instructional staff there as a trumpet instructor for the 2022 season where he and the rest of the staff led the group to a 6th place finish at the Drum Corps International World Class Finals. Reece has also been involved as an instructor for the band programs at Centennial High School and Howard High School, and has taken on a number of private students over the years.

Reece's approach to teaching is based on a foundation of respect and maturity. He understands the importance of not simply expecting respect from his students, but rather earning that respect through the quality of his teaching, and by offering his students the same respect he hopes they will have for him. Reece understands how the trumpet works inside and out, and he also understands how trumpet players work physically and mentally. By combining his vast technical knowledge of the trumpet with a supportive and respectful environment, Reece ensures that his students not only learn from him in the practice room, but also feel empowered to improve on their own time while carrying that drive for self-improvement to other areas of their lives as well.
