Teaching Philosophy: I have found that effective teaching involves convincing students that they can be great players (we’ve all been beginners before and remember the process), showing them the steps to get there (with patience), and having them improve their abilities and expanding their intelligence in the lessons to musically and mentally grow, all while having an enjoyable time in friendly, relaxed lessons from a caring and understanding teacher.

Get to know Richard Whittenberger

Rick Whittenberger is a native of Northern Virginia, and has been a multi-career professional in Electrical Engineering (with major corporations), Sports, and Music (piano and trumpet). He has been a tennis and golf coach for many years at Jefferson High School (TJ) in Alexandria, Virginia, where his players and teams have won many state championships, advancing to excellent colleges and careers.

In his early years he was student of the legendary trumpeter Col. Gilbert Mitchell of the U.S. Army Band, who had studied in the famous Williams School In New York. He also studied under the regional piano teacher Ruth Dean.

Rick not only teaches music, but is an active performer in many bands, orchestras, symphonies, and festivals locally, nationally, and worldwide (see Performance Experience).

He has found that his advanced degrees, experience, and success in multiple fields give him a greater perspective and effectiveness in teaching than coming from a single professional field. This has worked well with students, who often have many educational and activity interests. To those with varied or multiple interests, Rick says make music a major one of the them. It’s worth the extra effort and brings great satisfaction and enjoyment. Don’t miss the opportunity! Work hard and be the best.
