Performance Experience: Since 2009 in local rock bands, playing original material and booking DIY tours, with various local jazz groups from 2012-2015, with local theater organizations in the orchestra pit since 2018, and with various cover bands since 2019.
Teaching Experience: Teaching since late 2015, at Music and Arts in Manchester NH, as well as through other organizations and independently.
Teaching Philosophy: Music is for self-expression. I encourage my students to learn to read sheet music, to develop an understanding of music theory and music history, and to develop an extremely high level of technical skill. But ultimately those are all just tools to be used to express yourself. So once we're beyond the basics, the student drives the direction of lessons. Above all else, I want my students to enjoy learning and playing, because they're learning and playing what they're interested in.
Get to know Bill Curtis
I've been playing music in some form since I was in elementary school, but I first picked up guitar at age 15 after hearing heavy metal for the first time in one of the Guitar Hero games and thinking it was just the coolest thing on earth. I fell completely in love with the instrument, particularly 7 and 8 string guitars, studied jazz in college, and began teaching guitar lessons shortly after graduation.
Along the way I have been heavily involved in local theater and DIY music scenes, and performed with all kinds of ensembles in all kinds of venues, from jazz combos, to cover bands, to punk bands touring the northeast, in dive bars and auditoriums and orchestra pits.
