Many musicians at one point or another have been told that playing music can make a person smarter. Of course, like anything worth believing, this ideas has been disputed and challenged. While we may not be able to definitively say that taking music lessons is guaranteed to improve conative function, there are a few facts concerning music and the mind we can confidently share.
Fact 1: Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons.
Fact 2: Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education than those who do not.
Fact 3: Much like expert technical skills, mastery in arts and humanities is closely correlated to high earnings in later life.
