Get to know Zack Wilson
Zacchaeus Wilson Jr...was born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia. "Zack," as he's affectionately called, graduated from Nansemond River High in 1996 and earned a music scholarship to attend Norfolk State University, where he studied music education/performance emphasis in woodwinds and participated in SEVERAL ensembles, genres of music from classical/symphonic, jazz, big band/combo, R&B, gospel, alternative, rock, etc. Zack marched for 4 years (1996-2000) in the MIGHTY Spartan Legion University Band, where he served as section leader of the saxophone section for 3 years. This talented musician was brought up on Christian faith and is a man with a heart of gold and a HUGE melodious saxophone sound. Although Zack is a seasoned veteran of ALL the saxophones for over 37 years, he also plays the flute. But has a TRUE affinity for “his baby,” the tenor saxophone. Zack's main musical influences are from the likes of the late great jazz saxophonists, Grover Washington Jr, Cannonball Adderley, and Michael Brecker. His current influences are also saxophonists Joshua Redman, Maceo Parker, Najee, Gerald Albright, and he has had the pleasure of studying and sharing the stage with his mentor, multi-Grammy award-winning jazz/gospel saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who toured 7 years with the late Whitney Houston and befriended the late saxophonist Wilton Felder of LEGENDARY jazz group The Crusaders. Zack has also had the pleasure of opening for or performing with the LEGENDARY group "WAR", trumpet extraordinaire Tom Browne, and R&B singer Christopher Williams. Zack also had the honor of studying with the ICONIC late jazz saxophonist, the late Frank Foster, who was the conductor of The Count Basie Orchestra for SEVERAL years. Zack can CURRENTLY be heard playing with various groups throughout Hampton Roads' Virginia music scene and along the East Coast.
