About Alfredo Montez
Get to know Alfredo Montez
I began playing at the age of 7, self-taught learning basics with the Mel Bay series of instructional books. I am left-handed and played with the strings reversed for the first few years until 8th grade when I was forced to switch to right-handed by a jazz guitarist that I started lessons with. He told me it would be easier for him to teach me right-handed, so I agreed to try it. I played in bands with friends through high school and college. I studied piano and music composition at the University of Texas at Austin. I continued playing and teaching friends and getting referrals from other students. I moved back to Houston in 1989, taking a break when my two daughters were born and then began teaching again a few years later. I still play with several bands and have been teaching at Music & Arts for over 15 years. I have two grown daughters and two teenage sons who are also musicians. I teach all styles of music for guitar and bass.
