Get to know Andrea Shabazian

Coming from a musically talented family, Andrea was born to be a musician. Her father played the piano, saxophone and clarinet while her mother played the flute. She has two sisters that play the piano, violin and flute. Shabazian’s background in music goes as far back as second grade when she learned to play the piano. Shortly after, the piano was replaced with a cello. Then, in fourth grade her cello broke and her mother gave her a flute to practice. Shabazian was a teenager when she experienced the defining moment when she knew she wanted to pursue a college education and a career in music. She performed with the Greater Hartford Wind Ensemble, a community division group out of the Hart School of Music where she attended high school. The ensemble performed “An American Elegy” by Frank Ticheli. At the end of the performance Shabazian knew she wanted to continue her education in music. “At the very end, I just had goosebumps all over everywhere. I had this feeling of fulfillment and I was like this is what I want to be doing,”said Shabazian Opportunities to be a music tutor in High School established her aspirations to one day be a music teacher. According to Shabazaian, what makes CCSU’s Music Department unique is its “family atmosphere”. “The Music Department is just this huge family. All of the professors are unbelievably qualified and have all sort of influenced me at some point during my career,” said Shabazian. Shabazian made mention of her Band Director and Music Education Professor, Dr. Lauren Reynolds as well as her Flute Professor Jill Maurer-Davis as having influenced her music education greatly. Shabazian’s message to students interested in studying music in college is “Go for it.” One of her favorite quotes is “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Andrea confessed to being completely “gung-ho” for music and she is at the point where she is doing what she loves and is making a career of it. “It’s my life, my dream, and my passion. I eat, sleep, dream it. And I love the kids,” Shabazian said.
