Performance Experience: Ashley has offered several flute recitals including the Dorchester Center for the Arts, The Athenaem in Alexandria, VA; the kickoff for the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, “Thank God for Jazz” at the Delaware theatre in Wilmington, DE ; as a Guest performer at the 17th Annual Flute Fete at Howard University; and was granted the privilege as performing artist at the Harriet Tubman Museum concert series in Cambridge, MD.
Teaching Experience: Has taken a class for Kathy Blocki’s kinderflute which focuses on teaching foundational skills for beginners and intermediate students:
The Blocki Flute Method is an award-winning method designed to give the beginner an excellent foundation in beautiful tone, embouchure flexibility, rhythm and technique. This comprehensive step-by-step approach was written to ensure success; and includes theory and composition projects as well.
Teaching Philosophy: My goal is to help students develop commitment, dedication and focus, while offering a supportive and encouraging environment. Music expands curiosity and creates a path to grow and connect to the world. As a teacher, I strive to guide students through their musical journeys focusing on fundamentals such as technique, and musicality, while providing a learning environment that is interactive, intuitive, purposeful and most importantly fun.
Get to know Ashley Watkins
A
native of Cambridge, Maryland, Ashley Watkins began her musical journey at 10
years old playing in the fourth grade band. As she grew older, music began to
be much more purposeful in her life. Her first official one on one flute
instruction, was given by a flute teacher at a local music store. In high
school, she frequently traveled to areas beyond her eastern shore location to
participate in youth programs that helped solidify her music foundation. Ashley received an undergraduate degree in
music performance from James Madison University studying under Dr. Beth
Chandler and a graduate degree in music performance from The University of
Akron under the tutelage of George Pope.
