About Christina Mullinax
Get to know Christina Mullinax
I started learning music at age 5 in a children’s choir at
limestone college. Then at age 10 I began learning violin with a first chair
violinist/soloist till the age of 15, at which time joined the Lawson Academy
and took two semesters of trumpet. I then moved back to violin at age 16 where
I took part in a student teacher program at converse college. Also at the age
of 16 I began learning guitar. At age 20 I began learning cello also at
converse and viola at age 23. Private instruction from a first chair violinist
and soloist for 6 years, other instructors for an additional 4 and mentoring
with orchestra director for 16 years.
One of the moments that shaped me most was when I was while
I was getting instruction from Sarah Johnson, one of my Violin instructors- I
was invited to come to a seminar while I was under Ms. Johnson’s instruction. At
first I assumed that I was only an observer but then was asked to come on
stage, S. Johnson asked me what song I was working on (Ave Maria) and I Played
it first with the music, she asked me how long I had been learning it I said
about two weeks she said “then you don’t need the music” closed the book and
told me to play, it was awful, she stopped me at before I hit the third measure
and told me to close my eyes, take a deep breath and then start. The way she
took ten minutes and changed a song from being less than ideal to performance
ready changed my outlook on learning and teaching, she gave me confidence and
tools to take with me for the rest of my musical career.
I have been teaching since violin, viola, cello, and
classical guitar since January 2020. I love helping students achieve their
musical goals and help them understand music with passion. I love seeing
students go from struggling to hitting “light bulb moments” and help them
achieve their musical goals.
