Performance Experience: Jamie has experience performing a variety of genres ranging from classical, to rock and Brazilian choro. She has also performenced in numerous environments including for the Marina Piccinini International Masterclass at the Peabody Institute, at the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, with the Flutes on Fourth flute choir in Winston-Salem, and at Lincoln Center with the New York University Symphony.
Teaching Experience: Jamie has taught flute privately for the past five years coaching students to improve their playing for individual growth and in preparation for Concert Band competitions. While serving in MusicianCorps at Brunson Elementary in Winston-Salem, Jamie taught at-risk youth and ESL students to develop interpersonal skills through music programs. This included leading a drum circle, creating a musical field day, and directing a Mother's Day choral performance.
Teaching Philosophy: I love sharing my knowledge of flute through teaching with an emphasis on how listening to your body will allow for curiosity and growth in forming proficiency and your own unique style. Most importantly, I believe in making music fun!
Get to know Jamie Wilken
Jamie Wilken is flutist and teacher based in Black Mountain, NC with 28 years of experience in playing the flute. Her musical explorations have led her to participate in the Music Alive! FIPSE/CAPES grant exchange program at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil where she studied Brazilian flute repertoire. After her graduate studies, Jamie's passion for communal connection and being of service led her to MusicianCorps, a sector of AmeriCorps, in Winston-Salem. The culmination of her musical education, skills, and experience allow her to provide professionalism while her expressivity, warmth, and passion create a positive musical space for learning.
Outside of her creative endeavors, she enjoys spending her time being active through hiking, dancing, and practicing yoga.
