Get to know Justin Berg
Justin Berg returned to the Raleigh-Durham area in 2022 after 13 years in China and is presently Director of Music at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church. While abroad, he performed at the National Organ Museum in Xiamen, taught for and managed the Tanqin Music Centre in Ningbo, served as Executive Director for the nonprofit Orgelkids China, guest lectured at Beijing Central Conservatory, and created a specialized language training program for graduate students at Juilliard’s new Tianjin campus. In 2018, he orchestrated the relocation and restoration of a 1908 organ from New Hampshire to China, an effort documented in the film Opus 839. Prior to that, Justin worked as a musician for various churches in the United States, taught organ, piano, and harpsichord, and served as an organ building apprentice and representative for Gober Organs, Elora, Ontario. Justin holds a Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Oberlin Conservatory, a Master of Music in the same from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Arts in Musicology and Historical Performance from Duke, where he served as Guest Chapel Organist in 2003. He is the recipient of the University of Nottingham’s Liberal Arts Award and Vice-Chancellor’s Medal, the Ningbo City Government’s Camellia Flower Award for his contributions to education, and he is a member of the National Music Honor Society, Phi Kappa Lambda.
