About Mak Azad

I’m a guitarist, music educator, audio technician, and all-around music fan based in the DC area. I first picked up a guitar at age 12, studying classical technique in a formal classroom setting. Since then, my musical journey has taken me through flamenco, rock, blues, hard rock, heavy metal, thrash metal, and jazz along with years of performance, teaching, and audio work.

For more than 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching guitar and sharing my passion for music with students throughout the McLean and Germantown areas. Over the years, I’ve worked with students of different ages and skill levels, helping them build strong fundamentals while also developing their own musical interests and style. As someone who has learned through both formal instruction and self-study, I understand the value of both approaches and enjoy helping students find what works best for them.

My experience also extends beyond teaching. I’ve performed on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center and have performed with the George Washington University Jazz Band. I also spent time working as an audio technician at George Washington University, giving me experience on both the performance and technical sides of music. I’ve also had the opportunity to be part of one of the largest guitar ensembles in the Middle East, an experience that gave me a unique perspective on collaboration and large-scale musical performance.

Whether I’m teaching a beginner their first chords, helping an experienced player develop their technique, discussing tone and gear, or working behind the scenes with audio, I love being part of the music community. My goal is always to make music approachable, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Outside of music, I’m always up for talking about movies and video games. Some of my favorite bands include King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull, and Camel.
