Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in jazz and contemporary music performance

Performance Experience: I was lucky enough to be called to do a tour with a local group called Empire Strikes Brass in the summer of 2022, the summer before my junior year. From there, I’ve gotten many more playing opportunities locally and while touring.

Teaching Experience: Teaching private lessons at Music and Arts is my first step into the world of music education. I eventually want to get a licensure or degree to be able to teach music in school and to continue teaching private lessons.

Teaching Philosophy: I believe that the key to improving music is patience and fun. It takes time to make big improvements, and it is extremely important to feel a sense of accomplishment every time that the instrument is played. Setting small goals, being organized, and staying curious are all ways to have fun while playing. I look forward to every opportunity I get to play and am grateful to have students pass musical knowledge onto.

Get to know Mathias Farley

My name is Mathias Farley, and I play the trombone. My musical journey began when I was in the third grade, when I joined the taiko club at my Japanese immersion elementary school. It was then that I discovered my love for playing music, so I decided to continue into middle school. I began playing trombone in the sixth grade and found an immediate passion for it, auditioning for jazz bands, regional and state ensembles, and looking for any sort of opportunities to play in different settings. Continuing into high school, I decided to join the marching band as well and learned how to play the euphonium and tuba. When it came time to begin thinking about college majors, I decided that I wanted to become a music major and went to the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
