Get to know Sophie
Sophie Niemann first began playing the viola at eight years old through her elementary school’s music program and began taking private viola lessons at the age of nine. From the age of eleven to fifteen, Sophie was homeschooled, and she completed the Hauppauge school district’s high school requirements at the age of sixteen. Sophie is also a versatile vocalist, trained both in classical music and popular music. She has done NYSSMA for voice and for four years, she sang with the choirs of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Sophie has also performed in rock bands through the Rock and Roll University and Musicology Performance Center. She is currently the assistant director of the Allstars, the most advanced rock group at Musicology Performance Center.
Sophie began composing original music at the age of fourteen. Two years ago, Sophie entered her piece, Mount Olympus Suite, in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Emerging Composers Competition and received an honorable mention. Her compositions, Mount Olympus Suite, and Tombé, have been performed by the Five Towns College Symphony Orchestra and the SCCC College Orchestra, respectively. Furthermore, her solo violin piece, Fireflies, written for solo violin, was performed during the Ohman School of Ballet’s Spring Showcase in June.
