About Tony Boss
Get to know Tony Boss
Tony's educational background and teaching experience have both been long and varied. When he was getting his Bachelor's of Science degree in Marketing at the University of Connecticut, he made extra money by tutoring fellow students. The job so appealed to him that when Tony graduated, he went on to be a substitute teacher (20 years and counting) in the Fulton County public school system. In addition to substitute teaching, Tony has taught piano and guitar lessons at Metro Music Makers, and has been a music teacher at both the Wood Acres and Weber private schools.
Before deciding to make teaching his career, Tony was a professional actor in New York City. For over a span of twenty years, he lived in Manhattan, worked as an actor for the Hartford Stage Company, as a singer for the Winged Victory singers in the Catskills, and performed lead roles in summer musicals from Florida to Maine. Tony has also performed musical comedy at the Improv in NYC. During this time, he continued to hone his singing/instrumental craft at Brooklyn College and the Manhattan School of Music.
Tony earned certification to teach in the Cobb/Fulton schools from Mercer University in 2006.
A monetary reward has never been the objective for Tony wanting to teach. Instead, his satisfaction is derived from helping students achieve their musical goals. Not only does he enjoy learning himself, but Tony is constantly charmed by the mutually beneficial relationship that exists between teacher and student.
There have been several teaching moments that have stood out over the past thirty years for Tony. Having an adult guitar student follow him from New York to London to continue lessons, and watching an appreciative teenage student go from a beginner to intermediate guitar player during a brief nine-month tutelage are just two of the many highlights.
While Tony does not think he has musical superpowers, he does believe that with the proper mixture of empathy/encouragement, analogy, and patience, he can get any willing/practicing student to a level of musical proficiency that will satisfy them and let them truly enjoy making music of their own.
