How do you know if you need to change your Guitar Strings? What kind of strings do you need for your guitar? Here are some tell-tale signs on when you should change your strings and what kinds of strings you might need.
Strings will begin to look dirty when they need to be changed. The metal will oxidize from the dust, dirt and oils from your hands and start to sound dull when strummed. Another sign to listen for is when you run your fingers across the thin strings. If there is noise that sounds like friction it means they are ready to be changed. A good rule of thumb is to change them every 1-3 months depending on how often you play.
So now that you determined if they need to be changed; which strings should you get? Well, it really depends! If you aren’t sure if you have a classical or steel string guitar, bring it in to one of our locations and we would be more than happy to assist you! Strings will also vary depending on how long you have been playing and personal preference. Lighter Gauge strings will provide a brighter tone, not quite as full, but they will be easier to play on. Heavier Gauge strings will sound bigger and bolder, but they will be a little more firm. You may find your fingers hurting sooner than before.
Hopefully now you will be able to determine when your guitar needs some new strings, and what kind of strings you might want!
