Andrew Kovaleski is a saxophonist, bass clarinetist and new music advocate who has commissioned works by composers such as Charlie Wilmoth, Jennifer Merkowitz, Owen Hopper and Amy Gadd, and who has performed American premieres by Lucy Armstrong. He has studied with Jean-Michel Goury, Jay Miglia and Wes Miller, and has performed in masterclasses for artists such as Timothy McAllister, Debra Richtmeyer and Noa Even. Kovaleski is an employee at Otterbein University, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in 2016.
I believe that in order to be a successful performer on the saxophone or clarinet, a student must have an understanding of the fundamental elements of playing their instrument, including scale practice, embouchure development, music theory basics, and the culture of their instrument's performance. Once fundamentals are developed, students can focus on either jazz or classical performance and take steps to become a confident and knowledgeable instrumentalist through performance projects and listening homework.
In order for this to be successful, a student must be committed to putting some time into their study outside of the classroom regularly. Taking lessons is like a class at school, and practicing is the homework! If you are committed to putting the time in to become a quality performer, you will be right at home in my studio.
