About Erica Spear
Hello! My name is Erica, and I am a flutist and music educator. My musical journey began in Noda, Japan, when I started taking music lessons with my mother’s childhood piano instructor. I continued to take piano lessons throughout the years, then at age twelve, started playing the flute as well. My musical studies took me all the way to school at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where received my B.M. Instrumental Music Education degree, and my B.M. Flute Performance degree. Upon finishing at Appalachian State, I spent a semester studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, where I was fortunate enough to study solo and chamber music playing. Upon returning to the United States, I spent two years teaching elementary general music to students ages 4 through 11, while maintaining a freelance private teaching and performance career.
I am new to the D.C. metro area, where I am currently continuing to teach both elementary general music and private lessons. I believe that learning music, at any age, should be a fun and creative process that is tailored to each unique student. Each student possesses the ability to grow and succeed with focus and dedication, and I constantly look for new and innovative ways to engage all of my students. In our lessons we will build a solid foundation, all while exploring self-expression and creativity within a safe space. I always look forward to working with my students and seeing their growth and progress over time!
