Joe Martinez Barry plays and teaches guitar, bass, and beginner piano in the RVA. He earned his Bachelor's of Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University ('09) on the classical guitar. A recipient of the Jesus da Silva Merit Scholarship, Joe's time at VCU included a semester at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy under the tutelage of Italian virtuoso Giorgio Albiani. While on the continent, he interviewed contemporary guitarist/composer Carlo Domeniconi resulting in a paper that he published in Soundboard, the national publication of the Guitar Foundation of America.
As of late, Joe has found himself playing for a variety of cabaret and musical theatre productions around Richmond including Firehouse Theatre productions of "The Wild Party" (lead guitar; band was nominated by Richmond Theater Critics Circle for Best Music Direction) and "Hair" (bass). Left to his own devices, he is a fan of playing classical, blues, classic rock, latin, jazz, soul, and funk styles. Hablo espanol tambien.
Coming to music later than most, Joe has a vivid memory of the struggles of the beginning musician and has the patience to match.
