About Josh

Hello, my name is Josh Goering and I teach Guitar and Bass Guitar at Lakewood Music & Arts. I've been playing for 23 years, and have been teaching for 17. I began teaching while still in High School and went on to study Music Theory at Berklee and University of South Carolina before moving to Washington to pursue performing. When I started taking lessons at 12 it changed my life, and I hope to be able to bring that same experience to my own students. I love working with absolute beginners because witnessing them discover playing an instrument for the first time is the most rewarding experience I have as a teacher and as a musician. I tailor my lessons to each student and their individual goals. I'm more than happy to take it slow with an adult student who might not have much time to practice, or really push when I have a young student who shows real potential. I can also teach beginning Ukulele, combining singing with playing, Music Theory and help prepare students for Jazz Band. I have extensive recording and performing experience and can guide students through their own first experiences through yearly recitals and other performance opportunities.

Testimonials

"My son spent 3-4 years learning guitar with Josh and I can say in all honesty, it was an excellent experience. Apart from being a gifted and talented musician, Josh shows a great deal of flexibility and enthusiasm when dealing with his students. Right now, my son has a full agenda with his sporting activities, but as soon as he is ready to resume playing guitar, we'll be taking him right back to lessons with Josh. Thanks for all you do Josh. FIVE STARS!!!!" - Jake I.

"Josh is an amazing instructor. My nine year old has had lessons with him for two years and has learned to play a variety of different music. Josh has a way about encouraging my son and yet challenging him just enough. We love that he has a wide knowledge of classics and hits and finds a great balance between both during lessons. Each year Josh has a student concert so students can perform all they have worked on throughout the year. Josh is very patient, dependable, and fun. He cares for his students and what they learn and likes to see their progress and success. We highly recommend Josh if you are interested in learning from a professional with amazing skill and experience teaching and playing guitar!" - Jan V.

"I've been attending lessons with Josh now for six months. Before I started I had been playing for about two years without a clue. Josh got me to the point that I now have a much better understanding of how music works. I would say without hesitation I have learned more in the last six months with Josh than I did in the two years on my own. As an adult student he is very understanding when I come into a lesson and I have honestly not had a lot of time to practice that week. He is an awesome teacher and he is super personable. I would recommend him for lessons at any age level. Thanks Josh!" - Pat D.

"Our son has been studying guitar with Josh for over 3 years. Josh has done an excellent job motivating, educating and showcasing his student's talent. Josh is very flexible with his level and style of instruction, so if you just want to jam or become a versed musician...your time is well spent with a top shelf instructor like Josh." - Shawn P.

"Josh - Just wanted to say that I've been playing my guitar for our baby girl, and she absolutely loves it (and just figured out how to use a pick to strum, her first chord was D major). Thanks for showing me the ropes way back when, it's paying off in wonderful ways!" - Wilson G.

"Thank you, Josh, for an awesome student concert! You chose the perfect place for all of us to show everybody what we've learned. You're a great teacher. We all had a super time, thanks for all you do!" - Troy T.

"Josh Goering is an excellent teacher of guitar. As one of his senior students, I found him to be patient and able to adapt his teaching to my beginner status. Josh is very talented and gets 5 stars from me." - Ruth S.

"Anyone Can Learn and Feel Comfortable With Josh. I am in my 50's and have always wanted to learn to play the guitar. Due to some unforeseen health issues my memory has started giving me some problems. I still dreamed of some day playing the guitar and looked carefully at quite a few teachers. Josh is really special. He will let you work at what ever pace works best, and with what ever method you are most comfortable with. He listens, has compassion and is an extremely gifted instructor. He has given me encouragement and is very flexible with my situation. I highly recommend him to anyone of any age and any level. He is creative and will bring all his expertise to the tabel to make your experience a great one!" - Karen M.
