Nick Charlton is a contemporary drummer and composer based in Berlin CT. His influences include saxophonist Ornette Coleman, drummer for The Bad Plus, Dave King, and modern jazz giants like Wanye Shorter and Elvin Jones. He has studied drumset performance with Jim Oblon at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and Joe Labarbera at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. While at CalArts he also studied improvisation with the great jazz bassist Charlie Haden and composition with Vinny Golia.
Currently, Nick is involved in the Hartford-based creative rock quartet Queen Moo. Nick’s writing style is heavily influenced by free jazz and freely improvised music as well as many elements of modern rock music. In addition to performing he is also a music teacher for the West Hartford, East Hartford and Avon Music and Arts stores.
