About Paul Colombo

I first started teaching in music stores in 1980 when I was the first guitar instructor hired at The Wilmington Piano Company at the Concord Mall in Delaware. I have since made my living as a private music teacher and music performer. My education includes a Bachelor of Music Degree from The University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies Degree from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. As a teacher, highlights include writing the curriculums for and teaching the first guitar courses at Delaware County Community College. The courses have become very popular and are now taught in multiple classes each semester at the main campus in Marple and also at satellite campuses such as Downingtown. I was also nominated at the school for the Gould Award which is an excellence in teaching award. Other teaching highlights include helping students obtain scholarships to study jazz guitar at universities and also seeing many of my students go on to making the playing of music an enjoyable part of their lives. I also started the guitar program at Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown in 1994 and continue to teach there. As a performer, I have recorded and performed with Grammy winners Peter Nero (with the Philly Pops) and The Delfonics. Other highlights include playing with The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Reading Symphony Orchestra, The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, The York Symphony Orchestra, and The Pottstown Symphony Orchestra. I am first call guitarist at The Hershey Theatre for their national touring Broadway shows and have played many shows there including “The Full Monty”, “Spamalot” and "Chicago”. I continue to perform weekly in situations from solo guitar, solo with vocals, to performing as a jazz artist in local clubs and also with my funk/rock band The Fortunatos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9hw03w2HOY

I enjoy teaching people of all ages and levels. Teaching children is especially fun for me (I have an 8 year old son). Just bring a willingness to learn and the ability to schedule practice time (most days of the week). I teach all styles of guitar (rock, jazz, funk, blues, metal, acoustic, fingerstyle, classical), bass guitar, ukulele, bluegrass banjo, lap steel, music theory, ear training, jazz studies and improvisation, songwriting, and music recording technology. I have the knowledge and experience to make your music quest fun and successful.

I will do my best to make the lessons fun while laying out sound music principles. Looking forward to working within you and/or your children!

Testimonials

Paul is a fun, and very knowledgable teacher. He enjoys what he does and enjoys helping and watching you improve. He helped me learn tough songs that I struggled with for a long time before I began taking lessons from him. Now I can play and sing to so many songs I never thought I would be able to learn.

Kim Fitzgerald

Paul helped me get up to speed and ready for my college jazz guitar audition in a short amount of time. By giving me very focused lessons and an organized weekly practice schedule, I was able to accomplish my goal of getting into the college of my choice, and in addition, being awarded just over $11,000 in scholarship money. With so many guitar teachers in the Philadelphia area, I was very happy to find Paul and be able to work under him.

Andrew Hoffman

Paul constantly inspired me to learn jazz guitar and to keep practicing even when things got difficult. He helped me get into college for jazz guitar! So if you’re looking for a guitar teacher who can help you achieve your goals, Paul is the man for the job.
