About Shirley Shen
Shirley Xiuyu Shen is a pianist based in the Greenbelt area. Ms. Shen is primarily a solo pianist, but also has over 10 years of experience as an accompanist and playing in chamber groups and orchestra. Ms. Shen has over 8 years of teaching and coaching experience in piano, but also in violin and flute instruction.
Ms. Shen combines her artistry in several different musical areas to create a unique learning experience for each of her students. She incorporates the skills she has gained from diverse experiences as a classically trained pianist, jazz band keyboard section leader, keyboardist for several worship teams, orchestra experience both as piano soloist and as violinist/violist, and member of a women's choir. Ms. Shen believes in the importance of developing both excellence and a passion for music in her students. Thus, she encourages a collaborative decision on picking repertoire from different genres, as per student interest.
Another important cornerstone in her teaching philosophy is guiding and nurturing creative spirit and artistic expression in her students. She also emphasizes the importance of proper posture and good technique, along with music theory and teaching effective practice tips.
Ms. Shen received her BA in English in the spring of 2018, along with a minor in philosophy. She is currently studying with Dr. Mikhail Volchok at the University of Maryland College Park, and will receive her BMA in fall of 2018. Previous teachers have included Irina Lande, member of the Poulenc Trio and faculty at the Peabody Preparatory; Dr. Carol Prochazka, former piano chair of the Peabody Preparatory; and Ruth Yeo Peng.
