The Importance of Recording Yourself

The Importance of Recording Yourself

by Elliott

Many musicians often overlook the importance of listening to recordings of their own playing.  The wide-spread assumption is that by listening to yourself as you play, you achieve the same effect as listening to a recording. This is, unfortunately, not the case. By attempting to judge your own performance while it’s going on, you distract yourself, and very little is achieved.

By referencing a recording of yourself, you’re able to separate the judging from the practicing. When you do this, musical growth can occur at a much quicker pace. You will notice subtle issues in many aspects of your playing that would have otherwise been ignored. You may even notice several larger issues. The first time I recorded myself I was quite shocked at how much I was missing. I encourage you to try it out at least one time, you may be surprised by how much you’ll learn.
